Helsinki Biennial, taking place for the third time this summer, will feature 37 artists and artist collectives from Finland and around the world. For the first time, Estonia will be represented as well.
Estonian artist Laura Põld will present newly created textile works and ceramic sculptures, on view both at Vallisaari Island and at HAM Helsinki Art Museum. Estonian-born Helsinki based multidisciplinary artist Kati Roover contributes a video installation located in Vallisaari, exploring interspecies connections, with a special focus on the relationship between whales and humans.
The theme of this year’s Biennial is Shelter. Curators Kati Kivinen and Blanca de la Torre shift the focus away from humans to highlight animals, plants, fungi, insects, and minerals. Through this lens, the artworks create new sanctuaries, emphasize the significance of the natural world, and promote environmental awareness.
